Summer on Oquaga Lake

“We bought our house when our children were at an age where going camping with their parents was not cool anymore. In the fall of 1995, we enjoyed the Thanksgiving dinner at the Chestnut Inn restaurant at the lake. The weather was awful, but it was still clear to us that this lake had great potential. The previous house on this lot was for sale at the time. The south-facing windows made the house sunny and warm despite the November weather. We bought it before we realized all the amazing features of this lake. Straight from the tip of the diving board the water is more than 12 feet deep. The potable spring water of this lake is soft and creates a noticeable clean feeling on the skin after swimming. We owe the cleanliness of this lake to the sewer system that prevents the discharge water from the houses from entering the lake. The lake has no public access and is very quiet apart from July 4th and Labor Day weekend.
Our children spent their entire summers during their teens at this lake. From 1996 until they became too old to travel all 4 of their grandparents spent around 6 weeks at the lake as well. This was easily manageable since they would stay in the BlueBird guest house across the street, where they had their own breakfast and spent most of the day. We would all swim together before cocktails and dinner. After dinner, the grandparents would withdraw to the BlueBird to spend a quiet evening.
We have the best memories of these summers with all 3 generations enjoying each other's company. The roomy kitchen and the dining area are at the center of the house and have over the years greatly contributed to making these summers so remarkable for all of us.”
